FLY AWAY
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(recorded by The Blues Project 1966)

Deep within your heart you’re sick
The feelin’s gone - the road’s too slick
Your face has changed - it’s rearranged
There’s no way out you cry

But I know better than ya do
The lies ya tell - they all are true
About your trips through paper clips
You’re hung up on the sky

Oh and though it’s not for me to say
About the thoughts you thought today
I can only promise you that everything I said is true
There’s nothin left for you to do but fly....

FLY AWAY and hope the sky enfolds you
FLY AWAY don't say I never told you

The clothes you wore you’ve burned them all
And naked now it’s hard to crawl
To find relief from pseudo-grief
The table’s turnin’ fast

While tears of joy have turned to blood
You’re sinkin deeper in the mud
And the more ya scream it’s just a dream
The darkness comes at last
Oh and though it’s not for me to say
About the thoughts you thought today
I can only promise you that everything I said is true
There’s nothin left for you to do but fly....

FLY AWAY and hope the sky enfolds you
FLY AWAY don't say I never told you

WAKE ME SHAKE ME
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Recorded by The Blues Project 1966)

I saw my mother this mornin’
She was walkin down that lonesome road
Tryin to make it in due time
Before the heaven doors close
Tryin to get to heaven in due time
Before the heaven doors close

I thought I heard her say:
WAKE ME, SHAKE ME
Don’t let me sleep too long
Tryin to get to heaven in due time
Before the heaven doors close
Tryin to make it in due time
Before the heaven doors close

I CANT KEEP FROM CRYIN’ SOMETIMES
Words & music by al kooper
(Recorded by the blues project 1966)

I CANT KEEP FROM CRYIN SOMETIMES
I CANT KEEP FROM CRYIN SOMETIMES
Mama, she dead & gone
And I, ya know I’m all alone
I CANT KEEP FROM CRYIN SOMETIMES

Early in the mornin’ bout the break of day
I fall down on my knees, fall down & I pray
Think about my woman
My woman who’s long gone and
I CANT KEEP FROM CRYIN SOMETIMES
I CANT KEEP FROM CRYIN SOMETIMES
Mama, she dead & gone
And I, ya know I’m all alone
I CANT KEEP FROM CRYIN SOMETIMES

Late time in the evenin’ I watch the sun go down
Think about my woman
But my woman, Lord, she ain't around
My heart is filled with sadness
And my eyes are filled with tears
I CANT KEEP FROM CRYIN SOMETIMES
I CANT KEEP FROM CRYIN SOMETIMES
Mama, she dead & gone
And I, ya know I’m all alone
I CANT KEEP FROM CRYIN SOMETIMES

NO TIME LIKE THE RIGHT TIME
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Recorded by The Blues Project 1967)

You have made the moment into happy hours
And in just that moment
You changed the rain clouds into flowers
And I can see that you’re afraid
You think it’s some kinda mistake that you made
Well, let me set your heart at ease
Cause I’m down on my bended knees sayin to ya:

There’s NO TIME LIKE THE RIGHT TIME
And baby the right time is now
I said there’s NO TIME LIKE THE RIGHT TIME
If ya don't think that you can love me
You can bet I’m gonna show you how
Ya know I’m gonna show ya now

Every single second that you just let go
Multiply by a million
It just makes me want you that much more
Ya got me sittin here countin time
But sooner or later you’ll find
That a second’s so much dearer than a fifty dollar bill
If ya need someone to love ya
Well ya got someone who will

And there’s NO TIME LIKE THE RIGHT TIME
And baby the right time is now
I said there’s NO TIME LIKE THE RIGHT TIME
If ya don't think that you can love me
You can bet I’m gonna show you how
Ya know I’m gonna show ya now

WHERE THERE’S SMOKE THERE’S FIRE
Words by BOB BRASS & IRWIN LEVINE
MUSIC BY AL KOOPER
(Recorded by
The Blues Project 1966)

I’m gonna try and make you mine
Ya dont love me now but I’ve got time
I’ve seen you look at me with warm desire and
WHERE THERE’S SMOKE, THERE’S FIRE
Girl, when we kiss the flames grow higher & higher & higher

You touch my hand and make me feel
That I’m a man and love is real
And then you look at me with warm desire and
WHERE THERE’S SMOKE, THERE’S FIRE
Girl, when we kiss the flames grow higher & higher & higher

I LOVE YOU MORE THAN YOU’LL EVER KNOW
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(CHILD IS FATHER TO THE MAN 1968; Donny Hathaway 1974)

If I ever leave you
You can say I told ya so
And if I ever hurt ya baby
Ya know I hurt myself as well
Is that any way for a man to carry on?
Ya think he wants his little loved one gone?
I LOVE YOU BABY
MORE THAN YOU’LL EVER KNOW
MORE THAN YOU’LL EVER KNOW

When I wasn’t makin’ too much money
Ya know where my paycheck went
Ya know I brought it home to baby
And I never spent one round cent
Is that any way for a man to carry on?
Ya think he wants his little loved one gone?
I LOVE YOU BABY
MORE THAN YOU’LL EVER KNOW
MORE THAN YOU’LL EVER KNOW

I’m not tryin’ to be just any kind of man
I’m tryin to be somebody
That you can love, trust & understand
And I know that I could be
A part of you that nobody else could see
I just have to hear you say
It’s allright

I’m only flesh & blood
But I could be anything that you demand
I could be President of General Motors
Or just a tiny grain of sand
Is that any way for a man to carry on?
Ya think he wants his little loved one gone?
I LOVE YOU BABY
MORE THAN YOU’LL EVER KNOW
MORE THAN YOU’LL EVER KNOW

MY DAYS ARE NUMBERED
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(CHILD IS FATHER TO THE MAN 1968)

I woke up & found no one beside me
No hand to hold onto and no lips to guide me
What a hot world to face in the light of an angry sun
Ain't it hard to get on if ya ain't got that someone?

And it seems that MY DAYS ARE NUMBERED
Down to a precious few
People I know that MY DAYS ARE NUMBERED
Cause I cant get it back together without you

I see the heavy moonlight syrup drippin down my window
Flowin like a river through the tears that I have cried
I gotta find myself a reason to go on livin
But you cant breathe life into something that's already died

And it seems that MY DAYS ARE NUMBERED
Down to a precious few
People I know that MY DAYS ARE NUMBERED
Cause I cant get it back together without you

I CAN’T QUIT HER
Words & Music by Al Kooper & Irwin Levine
(CHILD IS FATHER TO THE MAN 1968)

I CAN’T QUIT HER
She got a hand on me she gotta hold of my soul
I CAN’T QUIT HER
Cause I see her face everywhere I go
In the city streets, in the country field
In the back of my mind I know it cant be real
For a woman to possess all the tenderness she had
But the hands of time keep tickin at my back
Cause its been so long since I had her back beside me

I CAN’T QUIT HER
Cause in my darkest night she come on like a light
I CAN’T QUIT HER
Try as I may with all my might
She had a woman’s touch - a young girl’s eyes
And in seconds flat I was proselytized
Turned around and made to feel sweet love
But the hands of time keep tickin at my back
Cause its been so long since I had her back beside me

True love is something every young boy knows about
And he fights his whole soul best to find some
I was a young boy til I held her in my arms
And now I find that I’m strung out behind some

I CAN’T QUIT HER
She got a hand on me she gotta hold of my soul
I CAN’T QUIT HER
Cause I see her face everywhere I go
I CAN’T QUIT HER
Ya know I see her face everywhere I go

SOMETHIN’ GOIN’ ON
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(CHILD IS FATHER TO THE MAN 1968)

Ya know I woke up this mornin’, people
First thing I did was to look into your eyes
And in that space where I used to find so much truthfulness
There was a stone cold pack of lies

Ya know that SOMETHIN’ GOIN’ ON
SOMETHIN’ GOIN’ ON but I don't know what it is
SOMETHIN’ GOIN’ ON, people
I gotta get to the bottom of this

I went on down to the mailbox
Seems I got the phone bill yesterday
They’re chargin’ me for some hour conversations there
From someone in LA

I know that SOMETHIN’ GOIN’ ON
SOMETHIN’ GOIN’ ON but I don't know what it is
SOMETHIN’ GOIN’ ON behind my back
I gotta get to the bottom of this

When you’re lovin your woman, people
And both of you know the score
Ya know it makes a longtime man suspicious
To come home to an unlocked door

He bound to know SOMETHIN’ GOIN’ ON
SOMETHIN’ GOIN’ ON but I don't know what it is
SOMETHIN’ GOIN’ ON people,
I gotta get to the bottom of this

HOUSE IN THE COUNTRY
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(CHILD IS FATHER TO THE MAN 1968)

No need to worry - folks in a hurry
Leave them behind you - no one can find you
HOUSE IN THE COUNTRY
HOUSE IN THE COUNTRY

All the relaxin’ will soon fill the cracks in
Good for your head too if you are led to
HOUSE IN THE COUNTRY
HOUSE IN THE COUNTRY
Green surroundings love abounding
Ya wont find a manhole there

Yes yes I need you - come let me feed you
I’ve never tried to - come let me hide you
HOUSE IN THE COUNTRY
HOUSE IN THE COUNTRY

I have never brought anybody there
Bring your own chair to sleep in
When we arrive after the drive
Then you can shower, talk for an hour
Then sleep in your chair or

Sleep on the floor there don't ask for more there
Sun wakes you up too glad you came up to
HOUSE IN THE COUNTRY
HOUSE IN THE COUNTRY

THE MODERN ADVENTURES OF PLATO, DIOGENES & FREUD
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(CHILD IS FATHER TO THE MAN 1968)

Father of my morning once my child to the night
I see that you have minds to cop
And i can only watch with sickened sorrow
Little do ya know of the progressions that you teach
The people that you reach are tired
Of living in a world of elastic towers

You dance with them and sing a song of changes
Talk with them of life & all its dangers
Surround yourself with now familiar strangers
Who kiss and who hug
And eventually mug you of your time

And the clock on the wall is a bore
As you wander past the door and find him lying on the floor
As he begs you for some more
You frozen smile

You cannot ever picture me ya know me by my mind
A file for your travelogue
Oblivious to the night, the fog, around you
The germs they are ridiculous-they bother you at night
The blood that rushes to your brain
The ticket on the plane you’re never catching

The price you pay exclusive of your taxes
To chop you up inside with tiny axes
The girl looks up to you from floors she waxes
And speaks to your belt with tears among her eyes

And the clock on the wall is a bore
As you wander past the door and find him lying on the floor
As he begs you for some more
You frozen smile

The metaphysic wrinkles in the face of what you face
Are hidden by the fake-up man
Who lives inside the Sterno can beside you
So climb ye to the mountains as the sun is almost gone
Escaping from your other selves
Your brothers hide among the shelves inside you

The games that people play can only bore you
But only those that know you don't ignore you
And how many times have I come there to restore you
And caught you lying on the couch with Father Time

And the clock on the wall is a bore
As you wander past the door and find him lying on the floor
As he begs you for some more
You frozen smile

I STAND ALONE
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(I STAND ALONE 1968)

I STAND ALONE
Cant nobody make me change my mind about my love
So many people tryin’ to bring a good thing down today
Ya know it’s down on the ground
Before it’s had a chance to get away
I STAND ALONE
In a world where people wheel ya this way, deal ya that
I tried so very hard to win her love for me
Cant nobody take me where I don't wanna be

Love of my life I feel so much love for you
That’s why I STAND ALONE and do the things I have to do
I have never been so much in love as I am today
And tomorrow - I know tomorrow
I’LL STAND ALONE

CAMILLE
Words & Music by Al Kooper & Tony Powers
(I STAND ALONE 1968)

Through the dark of day your light came shinin’ through
A golden ray of love that stretched from me to you
In my hour of need the whole world turned its back on me
You were there and not a word was said
A shoulder for my weary head
CAMILLE
If I forsake you may I die
If I disgrace you may I cry
A thousand nights and never feel another moments love
My sweet CAMILLE

I need your tenderness & all the love that's heaven-blessed
And all these things that we share together I owe to you
CAMILLE
You were there and not a word was said
A shoulder for my weary head
CAMILLE
If I forsake you may I die
If I disgrace you may I cry
A thousand nights and never feel another moments love
My sweet CAMILLE

I CAN LOVE MY WOMAN
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(I STAND ALONE 1968)

The sun comin’ through my window
Just to say that my day’s begun,
The smile that's upon my mirror
Lets me know that my loved one’s come
And I am not so much a man
As I am one to understand a woman
I CAN LOVE MY WOMAN
With a love that's deeper than a river
Give her chills and make her shiver
I CAN LOVE MY WOMAN

If I cry it’s because I miss her
I cant wait til my day is through
And if there’s just a subtle hint of night time
There's so much that I got to do
Every day is a new day when
I’ve got to win the love again of a woman
I CAN LOVE MY WOMAN
Strung inside a deep caress
Give her everything and nothing less
I CAN LOVE MY WOMAN

I’d be lost in a world of nothin’
Without my love beside me there
And I can see that her eyes are smilin’
Through the strands of her raven hair
And I am not so much a man
As I am one to understand a woman
I CAN LOVE MY WOMAN
With a love that's deeper than a river
Give her chills and make her shiver
I CAN LOVE MY WOMAN
I CAN LOVE MY WOMAN

RIGHT NOW FOR YOU
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(I STAND ALONE 1968)

The mystic smoke of our encounter
Disappears through the window tram
And you can translate through my eyes
And you can tell how glad I am
To be here, to be near
Beside you, my love

The tragic misadventures of a summers afternoon
Where the neighbors hide behind the fence
And howl at the moon
Oh I’m not scared, my soul is bared
Beside you, my love

The wizard in his tower
He looks down in angry rage
Another sun, it is closing in
And he cannot write a page
Though he could score and so much more
Beside you. my love

Silver beams of moonlight
They cross your face and they make me strong
Give me strength throughout a lifetime
To be tall where I belong
To be here, to be near
Beside you, my love

SONG & DANCE FOR THE UNBORN FRIGHTENED CHILD
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(I STAND ALONE 1968)

Once I was someone looking for someone with nothing inside
Something I faced now the whole thing’s erased
It’s an old game I tried
Through a crowd of people staring
Not a face in fifty caring now
And yet I still continue to flow through a world I dont know
I hear the music of my life

Lips softly stalling the infant is calling let nobody hear
Checking my face to select the right places
For wrinkles of fear
We see the Christ child gently sleeping
Mad Madonna softly weeping now
And yet I still continue to flow through a world I don't know

I look at you and you look back at me
And we stare at each other in complete apathy
I’m so sad
Evening is poor but the morning’s allright
If you stay pressed to me while the sun touches night
I’ll be glad

Something of noone’s inherent in slow ones
The deft matricide
You flee to the East on the wings of the Beast
For a new place to hide
Life is only matter crumbling
Souls & moral conscience tumbling
Down
And yet I still continue to flow through a world I dont know
I hear the music of my life

MAGIC IN MY SOCKS
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(YOU NEVER KNOW WHO YOUR FRIENDS ARE/1969)

Yes it’s only me it’s really you that’s off the wall
When you think that most of all It wasn’t you who was so tall
In the beginning
Once again you’re gone & then it’s really like a fountain pen
That’s out of ink - a missing link
That makes you really want to think of prison
Taste with me the joys of life and make them all your own
And anything that turns you on by all means take it home
To use again the moment that you need it

Oh darlin’ do not stop you know I never felt like this
It’s just like MAGIC IN MY SOCKS and such unrequited bliss
Should be rewarded
Whoa the day is really naked using night to shield its shame
And now I am not faking yes I really feel the same as
Henry Miller
Taste with me the joys of life and make them all your own
And anything that turns you on by all means take it home
To use again the moment that you need it

Oh darlin’ do not stop you know I never felt like this
It’s just like MAGIC IN MY SOCKS and such unrequited bliss
Should be rewarded

LUCILLE
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(YOU NEVER KNOW WHO YOUR FRIENDS ARE/1969)

What am I gonna do
I cannot live my life like this
I just cant take it no more
Baby you took my everything
My soul, my life, the birdies that sing flew south for shore
Tight with such a feeling of rejection
I find myself alone with no direction

Oh LUCILLE
What a dirty deal ya done to your man
Oh LUCILLE
What a dirty deal ya don't understand

Gave ya everything I had
You were so bad
I cannot speak the hurt I feel inside
Wish that you could see
If you were only me you’d taste the tears I cried
So what’s the sense in talkin’ now - you know it
So why must you just stare at me & show it?

Oh LUCILLE
What a dirty deal ya done to your man
Oh LUCILLE
What a dirty deal I don't understand

If love is just a game you play
Than day by day life will waste away for you, LUCILLE
Can’t you see how much could be
This room a world of you & me forever

What am I gonna do
I cannot live my life like this
I just cant take it no more
Baby you took my everything
My soul, my life, the birdies that sing flew south for shore
Tight with such a feeling of rejection
I find myself alone with no direction

Oh LUCILLE
What a dirty deal ya done to your man
Oh LUCILLE
What a dirty deal ya done to your man

FIRST TIME AROUND
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(YOU NEVER KNOW WHO YOUR FRIENDS ARE/1969)

Oh laughin’ lightly it was night time
She held my hand & she took me down
While askin’ strangers for the right time
We walked outside the leering lights of town
And slowly as it dawned on me that I’d never be the same
I bit my lip so hard it bled and I softly called her name

With hands as smooth as morning raindrops
She soaked my body head to toe
She asked me “Now?” and I said “Not yet, luv...”
“But when it’s time you’ll be the first to know...”
And soon the man inside me quickly surfaced to the top
And cryin’ out for help I found it much too late to stop

With eyes as wide as lighthouse searchlights
I tried my best to act demure
But she could not contain her laughter
As she told me “All that glitters is not pure...”
And knowing that for certain
It was lost upon the ground
I hope you find it easy
When it’s your FIRST TIME AROUND

LORETTA (Union Turnpike Eulogy)
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(YOU NEVER KNOW WHO YOUR FRIENDS ARE/1969)

I think we should talk this over now before it gets too late
Darlin’ I think you got to think about it now
Ya might be makin’ a big mistake
Can the love we shared for so long be over the hill ?
If he asks you to leave tomorrow
Don’t tell him that you will

Oh LORETTA
You oughta know better
Than to try and leave me
Oh LORETTA
You gotta know better
Than to try and leave me

Oh darlin I gave you anything there was to give
How can ya just turn your back
And take away my reason to live ?
My mind’s filled up with flashes of us lyin side by side
Now five years later honey
Is it really that hard to decide?

Oh LORETTA
You oughta know better
Than to try and leave me
Oh LORETTA
You gotta know better
Than to try and leave me

YOU NEVER KNOW WHO YOUR FRIENDS ARE
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(YOU NEVER KNOW WHO YOUR FRIENDS ARE/1969)

I wonder if you are really a friend of mine
If I were dyin’ of thirst wouldja be my glass of wine?
Time goes by so slow ya know
YOU NEVER REALLY KNOW WHO YOUR FRIENDS ARE

I wonder if you are really a friend of mine
If I were buyin’ a house wouldja come & countersign?
Time goes by so fast ya know
YOU NEVER REALLY KNOW WHO YOUR FRIENDS ARE

If you were down
Ya know I’d be there at your door
I’d shower you with food & money
After all, what are friends for?
They’re really such a bore; knockin’ at your door
Askin’ for some more

I wonder if you are really a friend of mine
If I were lying in jail wouldja get outa bed & pay my fine?
Time stands still for everyone
YOU NEVER REALLY KNOW WHO YOUR FRIENDS ARE

THE GREAT AMERICAN MARRIAGE
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(YOU NEVER KNOW WHO YOUR FRIENDS ARE/1969)

Nothing is wrong
Oh but nothing is right
Days filled with nothing
And nothing at night
We once had something
Something to share
Time came & turned us
When something was there
Now we lie side by side
Nothing to say, nothing to do
Love has become just a word
Something you’ve heard
But that’s nothing too

We’re surrounded by lies
Our friends joined by ties of family tradition
We all enter the act, a well publicized fact
No need for permission

I consider your face
Lying deep in somebody’s dreams
Sleeping eyes crying
Falling apart at the seams
Nothing is wrong
Oh but nothing is right
Days filled with nothing
And nothing at night

ANNA LEE
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(YOU NEVER KNOW WHO YOUR FRIENDS ARE/1969)

You left me when the crops was failin’ & the chickens died
Ya ran away from our little red farmhouse
On the mountainside
As soon as ya left the sun came by and he smiled on me
And somebody said ya met someone
And he chopped down your cherry tree

So ANNA LEE
What can I do for you?
Ooo ANNA LEE
I cannot tear myself in two like we used to do
Cause it’s all brand new
ANNA LEE

Now once upon a time ya swore ya was mine & I loved u so
So we went to see Sam & he sold us some land
And we both made it grow
But somethin’ got a hold of you
And took ya to town every Tuesday night
And when I’d come to look for you
I’d see ole Jim holdin’ ya tight

So ANNA LEE
What can I do for you?
Ooo ANNA LEE
I cannot tear myself in two like we used to do
Cause it’s all brand new

ANNA LEE
My time is growin’ long
And pretty soon the baby’s due
And I love this girl so strong
I ain't gonna leave her, Ain't gonna grieve her
Not for you
Not for you, ANNA LEE
There used to be a time I could look in your eyes
And trust inside your name
But times have turned themselves around
And it ain't no use in me playin your game
So ANNA LEE
What can I do for you?
Ooo ANNA LEE
I cannot tear myself in two like we used to do
Cause it’s all brand new
ANNA LEE

I’M NEVER GONNA LET YOU DOWN
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(YOU NEVER KNOW WHO YOUR FRIENDS ARE/1969)

You can say that your worrying days are over
You can say that your hard luck times are few
You can say that your life
Is probably twice as nice as anyone elses
And baby you’d be right - you know it
And it don't take too much to show it

I’M NEVER GONNA LET YOU DOWN
You don't have to worry
I’ll never let you wear a frown
You don't have to worry
I’M NEVER GONNA LET YOU DOWN
You’ll be up on your feet and wont life be sweet

I’ll take your time and make it into something beautiful forever
And if ya listen ya know that folks will say:
“Just look at them - they've really got it made...”
Bein’ so in love you’ll see
That each day is an eternity of happiness
See if I'm not right - I ain't lyin’
Cause everyday ya know I got to keep on tryin’

I’M NEVER GONNA LET YOU DOWN
You don't have to worry
I’ll never let you wear a frown
You don't have to worry
I’M NEVER GONNA LET YOU DOWN
You’ll be up on your feet and wont life be sweet

I’M NEVER GONNA LET YOU DOWN
Oh you better always be by my side
I’M NEVER GONNA LET YOU DOWN
Oh you’ll be up on your feet honey

BRAND NEW DAY
(from the United Artists film “The Landlord”)
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Easy Does It / 1970)

Last night I had a dream that the world
Was changin’ by leaps & bounds
It started up in the bigger cities
Than it spread to the smaller towns
The people began to smile at people
That they’d never even seen
And when Jeremiah woke me up
I was ready to live that dream
It’s a BRAND NEW DAY
Brand new way, BRAND NEW DAY

Ya know the mother called the father on the telephone
She cried My God I’m so upset
She said the boy left home naked this mornin’
All he took was the TV set
Than the sister picked up the extension
And she said “He’s just doin’ his thing...”
Than the father hung up on the mother
And the children began to sing
It’s a BRAND NEW DAY
Brand new way, BRAND NEW DAY

We gotta put our heads together
And see where we go from there
We gotta fight for what we believe in
Cause there’s somethin in the air and it’s a
BRAND NEW DAY
Brand new way, BRAND NEW DAY

20 million shadows stormin at the gates
Now how can ya be surprised
With the image of the Fallen Four reflected in their eyes
And though 20 million tongues are shoutin’ now
Its only heard by a precious few
But the years of night will pass forever
When the sun comes shinin’ through on a
BRAND NEW DAY
Brand new way, BRAND NEW DAY

EASY DOES IT
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Easy Does It / 1970)

When I was just a young boy
Ya know my father said to me
When ya get a little older son
Ya got to live your life casually
Ya got to take things real slow-like
If you really wanna last
You only live once in this life
Cant live your life too fast

EASY DOES IT, baby
EASY DOES IT everytime
Well now that I’m a little wiser
EASY DOES IT with this life of mine

When I grew a little older
I started noticin’ the female sex
With their foxy little bodies
And their long and shapely legs
So I got me a little woman
And I took her home to my bed
I said “How about it, baby??”
And this is what she said - she said:

EASY DOES IT, baby
EASY DOES IT everytime
Well now that I’m a little wiser
EASY DOES IT with this life of mine

Now ya gotta listen to me everybody
Cause ya know the same applies to you
When everything is over
Ya know the name of the game is you
It don't pay to be impulsive
But it ain't too bad to hesitate
Just like the old saying goes
Good things come to those who wait

EASY DOES IT, baby
EASY DOES IT everytime
Well now that I’m a little wiser
EASY DOES IT with this life of mine

BUCKSKIN BOY
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Easy Does It / 1970)

He is walking through his land with tears in his eyes
He is walking through his land with poison in his skies
He is naked in the mirror sad & stripped & put to shame
And people joke about him but its really not the same to
The BUCKSKIN BOY

They have stormed into his valleys
They have laid his people down
They have robbed him of his culture
In the land that he once found
He is wise in the ways of nature
And tired with the ways of Man
He is walking in a vacuum that will never understand
The BUCKSKIN BOY

They want to give him half an acre to live out all his years
And everything that is sacred will be sold as souvenirs

And the pipe it has been handed
Down to young ones everywhere
To the warriors of Peace who simply found the need to share
The love inside their souls just the way that Jesus taught
But the battle’s always over before it’s even fought
God save the BUCKSKIN BOY
God save the BUCKSKIN BOY

LOVE THEME
(from the United Artists film “The Landlord”)
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Easy Does It / 1970)

Let him hold you
Let him touch you
Soon you’ll understand
While he makes you into a woman
He becomes a man

The tenderness you lend to her
With every touch of your hand
Will make her feel just like a woman
While you become a man

SAD SAD SUNSHINE
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Easy Does It / 1970)

Wild-eyed & flashin’ cast upon me with the dawn
I have grasped the realization of the new day when it’s born
And while looking through a window
Framed with curtains that are worn
There is darkness even in the brightest morning

As the sun it slowly rises there is judgment in it’s glare
And it seems too much to ask to light a face that isn’t there
And the feelings that are wasted make you feel it isn’t fair
When she leaves without a whispered word of warning

SAD SAD SUNSHINE
Waking only those who really know
SAD SAD SUNSHINE
Wonder why you’ve kissed her with your glow

Magazines of memories I’ve read a thousand times
Just seem to find their way inside me
Like a dollars worth of dimes
There’s only one for every ten
No matter where ya try to climb
And the walls around me aim in one direction

I can still recall the drops of evening in your eyes
And your leaving in the morning
Should have come as no surprise
To one who based his way of living
On another’s world of lies
Oh I do not ever claim to seek perfection

SAD SAD SUNSHINE
Waking only those who really know
SAD SAD SUNSHINE
Wonder why you’ve kissed her with your glow

SHE GETS ME WHERE I LIVE
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Easy Does It / 1970)

Can ya see that she is fine
Sparkling just like wine in a crystal glass
She caught my eye and she was gone
I didn't know what train I was on
Cause it happened all too fast

But SHE GETS ME WHERE I LIVE
And I gave her all the love I could give and than some
Held her in these arms of mine
And asked her if she had the time to spend some

And the look upon her face can never ever be erased
From behind my eyes
And the love she brings to me is sacred as the sea
And so I’m not surprised that

SHE GETS ME WHERE I LIVE
And I gave her all the love I could give and than some
Held her in these arms of mine
And asked her if she had some time to spend some

Than I followed her to the top of the hill
And than I knew I’d never have my fill
Of her

Can ya see that she is fine
Sparkling just like wine in a crystal glass
She caught my eye and she was gone
I didn't know what train I was on
Cause it happened all too fast

But SHE GETS ME WHERE I LIVE
And so I gave her all the love I could give and than some
But SHE GETS ME WHERE I LIVE
And so I gave her all the love I could give and than some

GOD SHEDS HIS GRACE ON THEE
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Easy Does It / 1970)

Did you read it in the paper
or did you hear it on the news
Did somebody tell you on the corner
That Old Glory’s got the blues

Did you think that you could make things better
Pave the way to simplify your life
If you put down your disturbing thoughts in a letter
To be opened by some poor Congressman's wife

No!
Cause all we want to do is work the land
See a passing stranger and take his hand
And hope that someone out there will understand
You say they will
You say they will
I say they won’t
They’re gonna kill
Us all
Oh yes they will
Oh yes they will.....

NEW YORK CITY (YOU’RE A WOMAN)
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(New York City / 1969)

New York City you’re a woman
Cold-hearted bitch ought to be your name
Oh you ain't never loved nobody
Yet I’m drawn to you like a moth to flame
Oh I have suckled you in my sorrow
And I have sinned with you in my shame
But you ain't never even seen me
New York City, I’m tryin’ to beat your game

Oh and I rise up, Lord, and I fall down
It’s all in the merit of my ways
Don't you dare try & stop me now
I am settled right here in your haze
and I am stuck here now in the final phase

Now don't you send me to the country
Cause I ain't ready to concede
I will tell you when I’m ready
And I will call to you from down on my knees
Oh I might be standing but
I’ll be down on my knees

New York City you’re a woman
Cold-hearted bitch ought to be your name
Oh you ain't never loved nobody
Still I’m drawn to you like a moth to flame
And I guess that it’s silly
To think you’ll ever change

New York City
You're everything my heart & soul inside
New York City
Oh I’m stuck here - stuck inside of
New York City
I been with ya up & I been with ya down
New York City
I cant get myself outa this town
New York City
I feel it inside me every day of my life
New York City
I cant break loose - It’s all over me
New York City
You’re a part of my life in every which way
New York City
Everything I ever meant - everything I say
New York City
I cant break loose

JOHN THE BAPTIST
Words by Phyliss Major & Al Kooper
Music by Al Kooper
(New York City / 1969)

Holy John is down by the water
Bathin’ sinners and he wants your daughter
Tellin’ people that they better repent
Tellin’ your daughter that it’s him who was sent
I saw him down there in a long white gown
Takin’ sinners and holdin them down

John, John, woncha wash ‘em away
Make us ready for the judgment day
Take us down and hold us under
Make the heavens roar with thunder now
The waters are dirty and the reason is
Holy John had to wash away our sins

He came to town two weeks ago
It didn't take long before everyone did know
And down to the riverside they all did flock
To watch him stand upon the rock
I saw him down there in a long white gown
Takin’ sinners and holdin them down

John, John, woncha wash ‘em away
Make us ready for the comin’ day
Take us down and hold us under
Make the heavens roar with thunder now
The waters are dirty and the reason is
Holy John had to wash away our sins
The waters are dirty and the reason is
Holy John had to wash away our sins

It’s Holy John

GOING QUIETLY MAD
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(New York City / 1969)

I am sitting here so softly
And I can hear my wristwatch ticking
Wish someone would come & help me
I’m GOING QUIETLY MAD

Tried to read the evening paper
Couldn’t make it past page one
Wish someone would come & save me baby
From GOING QUIETLY MAD

Got ripped off by the traveling salesman
I lost my job & my wallet too
I sold my heart to the junkman
I guess there’s nothing left to do

Got a letter from my baby
Got a package from my Dad
Wish that you were here to save me baby
I’m GOING QUIETLY MAD

I am sitting here so softly
And I can hear my wristwatch ticking
Wish that you were here to save me baby
From GOING QUIETLY MAD
I’m GOING QUIETLY MAD
I’m GOING QUIETLY MAD

BACK ON MY FEET
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(New York City / 1969)

Now I’ve had a hard life
I been through two wives
And I’ve lived where the rats run wild
But now I’m much better and I’m writin’ this letter
Just to tell you ‘bout your baby child

So Ma, I been busy and I know you’ve missed me
So I’m writin’ this letter to you
I knows it’s been ten years but save up those sad tears
Mama let me tell ya whets new

Look at me I’m BACK ON MY FEET
Pulled myself right outa the street
So glad to be BACK ON MY FEET right now
I’m gettin’ smiles from the people I meet

Wontcha tell me bout Dad now
Is he still doin’ bad now
Workin in the same drugstore
Lookin’ for praise now
Did he ever get that raise now
He’s been waitin twenty years for

And poor brother Billy is he still so silly
Livin with that girl crosstown
Livin off her job
I still love that poor slob
Tell him someday I’ll be round

Look at me I’m BACK ON MY FEET
Pulled myself right outa the street
So glad to be BACK ON MY FEET right now
I’m gettin’ smiles from the people I meet
So glad to be BACK ON MY FEET

Well I married this girl she was a rich girl
Took her checkbook & a fountain pen
Wrote my name so fast now
Knew my luck couldn’t last now
I wrote myself three years in the pen

So I prayed to the Saviour
Got a year off for good behavior
Read the Bible so I’d understand
Now I’m workin’ steady & I’m married to Betty
Doin’ my best to be her good lovin‘ man

Mama so long now I know I was wrong now
Not to write in such a long long while
But I’ll save some money and you won’t think it’s funny
If I put you & Dad up in style

Look at me I’m BACK ON MY FEET
Pulled myself right outa the street
So glad to be BACK ON MY FEET right now
I’m gettin’ smiles from the people I meet
Don't have to worry bout nothin’ to eat
Now doncha think it’s kinda neat
Ya know I pulled myself right up by the seat
Of my pants
Look at me I’m BACK ON MY FEET

NIGHTMARE #5
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(New York City / 1969)

I was sixteen years of age when I fled my family’s house
And I hitchhiked down the highway
Tryin’ to make my way down South
It was in the dead of winter and it chilled me to the bone
But I was sixteen years of age
Just tryin to get a message home

It was cold & It was windy & I was two days in my flight
And my shoes were almost wore through
And the day was almost night
When the only car I saw that day came rollin into view
I just ran onto the highway for to see what I could do

I waved my arms & hollered and the car it did slow down
And I asked the man inside to help me
For to get to the very next town
He nodded yes & I jumped inside
I was thankful, safe & warm
But the stranger kept his eyes ahead
And drove straight into the storm

I guess I musta fell asleep but I couldn't tell how long
When I woke up in a hurry with the feel of something wrong
The stranger was still driving and he did not say a word
And I asked him many questions
But he seemed not to have heard

Then fear began to grab me & I reached out for the door
When I almost had it open
Well, the car began to soar
As it angled towards the heavens
I just tried to catch my breath
For it was then I knew what time it was
And the stranger’s name was Death

THE WARNING
(Someone’s On The Cross Again)
Words by Phyliss Major & Al Kooper
(New York City / 1969)

Elijah told ‘em on the mountainside
Enoch told ‘em in the valleys too
A man is comin who will turn the tide
A man disguised as me & you

SOMEONE’S ON THE CROSS AGAIN
Someone’s throwin dice
One time ‘round was bad enough
Do we have to do it twice?

And rumor has it that the Holy Man
Healed the sick with gentle words he said
And caused confusion in the Holy Land
Until the only word left was dead

SOMEONE’S ON THE CROSS AGAIN
Someone’s throwin dice
One time ‘round was bad enough
Do we have to do it twice?

So help your brother when he reaches out
Ya know he'd rise up if he only could
Let him whisper don't ya make him shout
Ya know he’s standin’ where the Saviour stood

SOMEONE’S ON THE CROSS AGAIN
Someone’s throwin dice
One time ‘round was bad enough
Do we have to do it twice?
SOMEONE’S ON THE CROSS AGAIN
Do we have to do it twice?

A POSSIBLE PROJECTION OF THE FUTURE

Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Possible Projection/ 1970)

God helped Moses so I know he wont let me down
I’m at the bottom of my ladder
And it weren’t no easy way down
All the folks that used to be around me
You wont find em knockin at my door
And you never know who your friends are
Til they don’t come round no more, Lord

My money ran out last evenin’
My woman she ran out today
And no one gives a fuck what I’m singing
Which makes it even harder to say
I’ve worked almost all my lifetime makin music as best I can
But you never know who your friends are
Til they don’t come round again

Now I’m just an old nothin’ with memories of fifty years
I started with The Blues Project
Spent some time with Blood Sweat & Tears
My life was filled with music
My heart was drenched in sound
And if you go see an old movie
You might hear me in the background

These old eyes don't see too good no more
These days they say that I’m deaf
My hands are so soft & wrinkled
So let me play you all that I got left, Oh Lord

FLY ON
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Possible Projection/ 1970)

If you think that I’m not loving you
If you think I’m not doing the things I said I’d do
Well, some of us among you would say you were mistaken
Some would say you were paranoid
To bring about heartbreaking

If ya cant check yourself
if you cant return my caress
Woman I refuse to dwell in a house of bitterness
I could love you deeper than any woman ever loved a man
But if you cant get next to me than I will let go of your hand

And you can FLY ON
Go ahead & FLY ON
I know you got to FLY ON
Go ahead & FLY ON

Oh I can see the change that's come into your eye
There's another face in the space I used to occupy
Aw you don't have to say a word
Your face says you’ve decided
Oh but noone knows what wrong is, honey
Until after they’ve tried it

So go & FLY ON
I know you got to FLY ON
Go ahead & FLY ON
Go ahead & FLY ON

I will always love you no matter what you do
As a matter of fact my love
Will just grow stronger if we’re through
And if by chance you ever see the error in your ways
Then I will take you back again
And we can live like yesterday and

FLY ON
Together we could FLY ON
We could FLY ON
Together we could FLY ON

LET YOUR LOVE SHINE
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Possible Projection/ 1970)

LET YOUR LOVE SHINE
Let it shine like the light that reflects off the moonlit bay
Let your words ring
Deep inside you will find all the soul that ya need to say
And you will understand the masterplan
Of woman & man together
When you LET YOUR LOVE SHINE

LET YOUR LOVE SHINE
Let it light up your eyes like a 4th of July’s night sky
I do love you
Let the thrill that you feel be a part of just you & I
For I am lost behind the love I find
Inside your mind today
When you LET YOUR LOVE SHINE

And I am so knocked-out that I could shout
That it’s all about
I love you
I’m so excited I Love You

LET YOUR LOVE SHINE
LET YOUR LOVE SHINE

And you will understand the masterplan
Of woman & man together
When you LET YOUR LOVE SHINE
When you LET YOUR LOVE SHINE
When you LET YOUR LOVE SHINE

BENDED KNEES
(PLEASE DON'T LEAVE ME NOW)
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Possible Projection/ 1970)

PLEASE DON'T LEAVE ME NOW
I’m speakin’ to you from the heart
Even though I treat ya bad & make ya cry sometimes
You must believe in my better part

PLEASE DON'T LEAVE ME NOW
Though it seems I’ve shut you out
There are things buried deep inside of me
That we must take the time to talk about

I don't know why I treat you so bad
But you’re my girl and there’s no two ways about it
I don't know why I’m so mean to you
But I don't think there’s anything that I can do about it

You are me on your terms and I am yours on mine
Don't ya think that we should really stay together
To be apart is such a waste of time
PLEASE DON'T LEAVE ME NOW
PLEASE DON'T LEAVE ME NOW

LOVE TRAP
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Possible Projection/ 1970)

And I can feel these strings of warmth encircling me
What can I do, what can I say, honey
You’ve taken all my reasons to be free
Such soulful shackles around my heart
That I have no will to break
What can I do, how can I move
I’m caught and there’s no escape

Here inside your LOVE TRAP
I cannot move a muscle
Here inside your LOVE TRAP
I ain't gonna put up no fuss I’ll stay here willingly
Cause all this love is killing me with tenderness
Mama Mama I love it

In times gone by I used to yearn for every smile I saw
And in their arms I’d taste their charms
Oh but never nothing more
Until you came into my life with your weaving magic spell
And in your hands this lucky man
Is like a prisoner inside a cell

Here inside your LOVE TRAP
I cannot move a muscle
Here inside your LOVE TRAP
I ain't gonna put up no fuss I’ll stay here willingly
Cause all this love is killing me with tenderness
Mama Mama I love it

CHILDHOOD’S END
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Possible Projection/ 1970)

We cannot dally here any longer
We cannot do the things we did
Yes, my friend it’s CHILDHOOD'S END
For you and me

We cannot laugh again with no reason
We cannot fall apart when things go wrong
Once again it’s CHILDHOOD'S END
For you & I

Ya know it’s such a dirty shame
That we will never be the same again
And it’s hard enough to take without a single break
Woe is me, my friend

We cannot pin our dreams to the donkey
We cannot act like children anymore
Yes my friend its CHILDHOOD'S END
For you & I
Yes, my friend it’s CHILDHOOD'S END

(BE YOURSELF) BE REAL
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Naked Songs/1972)

Why do we try to be what we wanna be
If we can never be what we are?
And if we could find the way to enjoy everyday
We would have nothing to look forward to at all
There’s nothing wrong with bein’ just somebody
Cause everybody’s got some beauty deep within
And it’s not so hard to doubt what the next guy’s all about
When he lets the evil out and keeps the good stuff in

BE YOURSELF, BE REAL
BE REAL
Don't be nobody else
BE REAL, BE REAL
BE REAL

If the woman is loving you
For the soulful little things you do
You oughta see her through
Cause she’s few & far between
And today there is many a man
Who will walk up & down this land
And never really understand what somethin’ like that means
Now I don't believe there’s a man for every woman
So if you get lucky don't be playin’ any game
And you must never hide
The little things you really feel inside
Or someday someone’s bound to go insane

BE YOURSELF, BE REAL
BE REAL
Don't be nobody else
BE REAL, BE REAL
BE REAL

JOLIE
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Naked Songs/1972)

When I was comin’ down from someone else ya know
You took my hand
You pushed me up, you pulled me out
Ya done me good do ya understand?
Noone else around could have saved me
Oh JOLIE ya shone just like the sun
And like the dead you came & you raised me
Oh JOLIE Look at what you done

You may be young but you got so much more
Than any girl I know
And I see your face most every place
Don't make no difference where I go
So lets not fall so fast that we get crazy
Oh JOLIE will ya think of me ?
And when your picture of me gets a little hazy
Ya know JOLIE its only you I see

Noone else around could have saved me
Oh JOLIE ya shone just like the sun
And like the dead you came & you raised me
Oh JOLIE Look at what you done
Look at what you done

BLIND BABY
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Naked Songs/1972)

BLIND BABY - ya was born, could not see
BLIND BABY - so much better off than me

Your father was down-hearted
When the doctor broke the news
He couldn’t understand how his life was so abused
And you cannot feel your mama
Though you suckle of her breast
Doncha know she’s bound to leave you
Just like all the rest

BLIND BABY - ya was born, could not see
BLIND BABY - so much better off than me

Ya cannot read the paper-ya cannot watch TV
Ya cannot see the hopelessness in someone’s eyes like me
Ya cant be able to tell who it was
Who spat into your face
But it don't take sight to know what it’s like
To always be last place

BLIND BABY - ya was born, could not see
BLIND BABY - so much better off than me

I know your life is darkness but you smile instead of cry
But there must be truth in darkness
Cause the light just hurts my eyes

BLIND BABY - ya was born, could not see
BLIND BABY - so much better off than me
So much better off
Better off than me

PEACOCK LADY
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Naked Songs/1972)

She is like the trees and with the ease of summer’s breeze
She is leaving
Gone & left me lone she’s headin’ home to walls of stone
For no good reason
And not a word to anyone
She’s like the bird with tail of setting sun

PEACOCK LADY-roll me over
Hold me softly, be my lover

Heard her on the air and I did care to pay the fare
To hear her sweet song
Held her by the wing, I heard her sing, she made it ring
But that was all wrong
A little girl is somewhere playing
So she must fly-she can’t be staying

PEACOCK LADY-you’re all around me
Let me inside - soft surround me
PEACOCK LADY

WHERE WERE YOU WHEN I NEEDED YOU
Words & Music by Al Kooper & Irwin Levine
(Naked Songs/1972)

I said Baby, now that you’re here
What’s that I see? Is it a tear ?
Did he tell you goodbye & is that the reason why you’re here
Well, I got to know now that you need me so

WHERE WERE YOU WHEN I NEEDED YOU
Where were you when I was going through
The heartache & fear of not having you here
Where were you?
You were with him
I was alone

The lonely night crept up on me
And you left my arms so suddenly
Now you’re feelin’ so bad-do ya miss the love you had
Here with me
Well I gotta know now that ya need me so

WHERE WERE YOU WHEN I NEEDED YOU
Where were you when I was going through
The heartache & fear of not having you near
Where were you?
You were with him
I was alone

UNREQUITED
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Naked Songs/1972)

You are here with me
Ever since I have been with you
But life is so unkind I know ya know it’s true
I’m lovin’ you
But he don’t know I’m lovin’ you tonight

Here inside my house
He don't know how much I care
But life is so unjust I know it isn’t fair
I’m lovin’ you
But I don't know if he’s lovin’ you tonight

Little do we know how much it takes to let the other one
Know how much we care about you
And I can only take so much and then
I’ve got to just walk away, anyway

You are here with me
Ever since I have been with you
But life is so unkind I know ya know it’s true
That love is blind
But love & I can hear the engines whine
Inside of you......

THIS DIAMOND RING

Words & Music by Al Kooper/Bob Brass/Irwin Levine
(Act Like Nothing’s Wrong/1975)

Who wants to buy THIS DIAMOND RING ?
She took it off her finger now
It doesn’t mean a thing

THIS DIAMOND RING doesn't shine for me anymore and
THIS DIAMOND RING doesn't mean what it did before
So if you got someone whose love is true
Let it shine for you

This stone is genuine like love should be
And if your baby’s truer than
My baby was to me

Than THIS DIAMOND RING can be something beautiful and
THIS DIAMOND RING can be dreams that are coming true
Than your heart wont have to break like mine did
If there’s love behind it

MISSING YOU
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Act Like Nothing’s Wrong/1975)

I still recall the bouquet of your body
As though it were yesterday
And with trembling hands I reach for the bottle
To drink all my sadness away
Loving you, baby, was the peak of my life
Now there’s nowhere for me to go but down
And I feel like that boy in “The Prince & The Pauper”
As he dressed up in rags and than gave up his crown

MISSING YOU has made me a shell of a man
MISSING YOU until I just cant understand
MISSING YOU baby
Whatever tore us apart now?

Oh destiny you’re so mean & you’re cold
And there’s nuthin’ folks can do to cramp your style
Just like the man who’s convicted of murder
Will pay for his crime when he walks that last mile
Lovin you baby, was my whole life to me
But you start dyin the moment that you’re born
And no one is there when you’ve picked all the roses
To come to your side & pull out every thorn

MISSING YOU has made me a shell of a man
MISSING YOU until I just cant understand
MISSING YOU baby
Whatever tore us apart now?

(PLEASE, NOT) ONE MORE TIME
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Act Like Nothing’s Wrong/1975)

When the sun pours down like honey
From the sweet California sky
Than the haze & the smog are both soon forgotten
And it’s the very same way with love now
When ya hurt from an old affair
Ya know the pain will disappear when a new love’s gotten
Don’t ask me why I do it
Cause you’ll only say “I knew it!”
And I’m played just like a fool everytime
Oh but if you know the answer
Than I wont even ask her
Cause it’s hard enough for me to go down ONE MORE TIME

And when it’s 7 AM in Vacaville
It’s really 10 AM in GA
She said I didn't wanna wake ya up just to warn ya
And so the taillights soon will flicker
And the Georgia sun will rise
But I will still be here in the dark in California
Well I’m a two-time loser
And that could sober up any boozer
Or at the very least make him looser in his prime
Oooh I never even called her
So why does everyone say I balled her
Cause I don't think I have the energy
To go down ONE MORE TIME

Please don’cha say that it’s magic
Cause it always ends up tragic
The act of love so sweet will soon become a crime
And please doncha make me taste it
Though it seems such a shame to waste it
But I don't think I have the energy
To go down ONE MORE TIME

IN MY OWN SWEET WAY
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Act Like Nothing’s Wrong/1975)

I have seen you in the morning
Standing naked in the sunlit bay
Let me wrap my arms around you
Let my good old love surround you
Let me love you IN MY OWN SWEET WAY

I can’t help myself when I get the fever
When your body calls out my name
You are lookin’ so good to me
Got your juices runnin’ through me
Let me love you IN MY OWN SWEET WAY
Let me love you today

Wont you stay here & be my lady
You can stay here every night and day
Cant you see I want to show you
All the ways I want to know you
Let me love you IN MY OWN SWEET WAY
Baby woncha let me love you today

TURN MY HEAD TOWARDS HOME
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Act Like Nothing’s Wrong/1975)

I have never ever been the one
To feel the need to wanna settle down
I’ve accommodated other girls
That I never stayed long around
Til ya came into my life with your flashin’ eyes
And your magic ways
Made me wanna stop and take a wife
And think about the future ‘stead of day to day
You - you made me TURN MY HEAD TOWARDS HOME

Every night was with another girl
I’d make my way home with the sun
After while they all looked the same
Any one coulda been anyone
I was losin’ my taste for joy
Til ya came and made me see the light
Ya took the misery and made a happy boy
And with your kiss ya changed the wrong to right
You - you made me TURN MY HEAD TOWARDS HOME
You turned me right around

Baby now ya got me settled down
It wasn’t hard for you to change my ways
Don't have to worry bout me messin' around
I’ll be here for the rest of my days
Ya built your love with honesty
There ain't no better way to keep your man
No matter where I go you’re part of me
Cause you’re the one who made me understand
You - you made me TURN MY HEAD TOWARDS HOME

You picked me up when I was down
You brought the smiles & you took away the frowns
You made me stand up
You made me TURN MY HEAD TOWARDS HOME
And there ain't no girl who can catch my eye
Cause I would never ever make you cry
And if anybody asks me why I say
You made me TURN MY HEAD TOWARDS HOME
And when it comes to good lovin'
Well you’re the very best
I believe that you’re head & shoulders above all the rest
And you don't need to pass no test
You made me TURN MY HEAD TOWARDS HOME

HOLLYWOOD VAMPIRE
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Act Like Nothing’s Wrong/1975)

She moved across the room with sweet abandon
Talking with her everybody's eyes
And I was rooted to the spot where I stood standin’
And no one who was there could hear my cries
Tonight for sure she’ll trap somebody's tenderness
And drink so very deeply of his soul
And though I am one whose words could put an end to this
Somehow I am under her control

Strange lady - skin that is pale as winter’s snow
Strange lady - lips so blood red I’d swear you’d know
Behind so much beauty burns the fire
Of the curse upon us all
V A M P I R E

And I had no idea the night I found her
How hungry she had been to taste of man
And though words cannot describe our strange encounter
To look into my eyes you’d understand
I am not me - I’m timeless as a book now
A certain way that people just suspect
But anyone who takes a closer look now
Would see her evil mark upon my neck

Strange lady - skin that is pale as winter’s snow
Strange lady - lips so blood red I’d swear you’d know
Behind so much beauty burns the fire
Of the curse upon us all

THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER
Words & Music by Al Kooper
Championship Wrestling/1982

Oh THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER
And it cries out for its prey
In the middle of the night time when you’re sleepin'
And sometimes in the middle of the day

It stalks it’s victims without mercy
Cause it longs for some company
Remember that THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER
And the heart is inside of me
Can’t ya feel it beatin’ now

It keeps its distance until it’s certain
That you’re captured so easily
I’m sayin’ that THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER
And the heart is inside of me
Can’t ya feel the heartstrings

There is no shelter in desperation
It takes no quarter in urgency
Remember that THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER
And the heart is inside of me
Listen for the heartbeat

LOST CONTROL
Words & Music by Al Kooper
Championship Wrestling/1982

You was out there
And I thought that you were for the askin’
I’ve never been unfair
But I was lookin’ for love everlastin’
Three years of takin’ anything that I could find
A one night stand, ya understand
Wasn’t what I had in mind

And I believe that I LOST CONTROL
I wanted you and that's all that really mattered
Yeah I believe that I LOST CONTROL
I couldn’t tell that his whole world had shattered
All I could see was what you whipped on me & I
LOST CONTROL

Now he was your man
He had his faults but ya done your best to stick by him
But then - BAM BAM
He shot ya down with anyone around who would try him
Three years of takin’ anything that he could find
A one night stand, he didn't understand
Wasn’t what you had in mind

And I believe that you LOST CONTROL
Ya ran to me & it felt like a whole new feelin’
I believe that ya LOST CONTROL
You had an open wound & I was so good at healin’
But all you could see was the good side of me and you
LOST CONTROL

We had no consideration
We couldn’t help ourselves inside
It was a sorry situation
And he came to me one night & he cried
He said “You cut me worse than any woman ever hurt a man”
I said “My man I’m real sorry but that was not my plan

But ya just LOST CONTROL
Ya let go long ago so why keep holdin’ on?
And if it hurts your soul
It’s just the pain that remains for a while after love is gone
You just can’t fight cause ya know that I’m right and you
LOST CONTROL

LIVING IN MY OWN RELIGION
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Rare & Well Done/2001)

I wish that I could put into words
How much you mean to me
And I wish that I could tell you
How much you have helped me
To live my life so unselfishly, Lord
My parents raised me up
To always live inside your shadow
But I must admit there were times
Some times when I would stray
But now I’m LIVING IN MY OWN RELIGION
And it’s there that I shall always stay

When I was just a boy I would hear the songs of praise
The Swan Silvertones & The Harmonizing Four
And though these were not my people
Somehow I felt captured in your gaze
And from that moment on - I never thought in terms like that Anymore
Ya see, no man’s color could corrupt my vision
Once I was bathed in the Glory of Your Love
But I seek no House of Worship to praise your name
Yes I’m LIVING IN MY OWN RELIGION
But I worship you Lord just the same

My friends may call me up on Sunday morning saying:
“Come along with us to church & we will pray...”
No no you see I’m already in my House of Worship
And it is there I believe I’ll always stay

So take me as I am
With my love of God intact
And I will serve you Lord
Til I’ve sung my last song
I will praise you every morning
And I will thank you God each night
And though some may scorn me
We both know just where I belong
My house will always be my church
You know my temple is my mind
And I will worship You while others misunderstand
Cause I’m LIVING IN MY OWN RELIGION
That's what I’m doin’ now
I’m LIVING IN MY OWN RELIGION
But I’ll always know we’re hand in hand

AUTUMN SONG
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Rare & Well Done/2001)

What can ya do for the winter?
It’s so cold outside
And it’s so hard to hide
In the winter
Spring can’t decide what she wants to be
Young or old - soft or bold
Such a fickle lady

I don't know how I spent all summer long in the city
Wasn’t too pretty in my room lyin’ there
Hungry and thirsty for some country air
People swearin’ and starin’ out loud

I found my soul in the red & the gold of the Autumn
I fell for the Fall and most of all
Old Mother Nature is painting a scene
Of a colorful dream she once had there with Dad
In the Fall

RACHMANINOFF’S BIRTHDAY
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Rare & Well Done/2001)

Did ya think I wouldn’t notice
The dead rose you left there on our bed
It’s just the way I think your mind works
Cause I’m not that good with things unsaid
You always could express your feelings
In little ways like that, my dear
But then I’d have to play detective
To substantiate my every fear
The days fly by from March to April
Oooh I watch our love just waste away
But what a time you picked to leave me on
RACHMANINOFF’S BIRTHDAY

You said he’s dead and so are we now
The taxi came you smiled and left
Now my head’s mixed up & my heart is missing
To you it’s just another petty theft
The house is still there’s no more music
The piano’s screamin’ out your name
I hold my ears til I cant hear it
I close my eyes and pray for rain
The seasons change from Fall to Winter
Soon the sun will melt that snow away
But it was cold that night you left me on
RACHMANINOFF’S BIRTHDAY
No I just cant believe you left me
On RACHMANINOFF’S BIRTHDAY

THEY JUST DON'T MAKE ‘EM LIKE THAT ANYMORE
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Rare & Well Done/2001)

Fame is a funny thing
The way it wraps itself around you like a second skin
And you start to go up
At the same time you start to go down
Friends that ya had before
Are never quite the same friends anymore
And the new ones leave a lot to be desired

Still discovering that I love to play & I love to sing
But I’m quite content to stand right here on the shore
With a teardrop in each eye
Cause I have watched most of my friends die
And THEY JUST DON'T MAKE ‘EM LIKE THAT ANYMORE
For sure THEY JUST DON'T MAKE ‘EM LIKE THAT ANYMORE

I remember when we sat in the bar
And we thought that we’d conquered the world
Cause we always had the latest drugs
And our choice of the prettiest girls

But today’s such a long way from that bar
And it’s so hard to survive that shootin’ star
But I ain't no saint
Just a veteran of that war

And if we could learn from the past
Maybe we wouldn’t wanna live our lives that fast
Cause ya know what we were put on this earth for
And THEY JUST DON'T MAKE ‘EM LIKE THAT ANYMORE
No sir THEY JUST DON'T MAKE ‘EM LIKE THAT ANYMORE

A DRIVE THROUGH THE OLD NEIGHBORHOOD
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Rare & Well Done/2001)

Don't ignore me - you still floor me
After all this time
This is no joke - let’s have a smoke
And talk about old times
It’s been hard without you if ya know what i mean
And I bet you do
And I wonder if ya been thinkin’ ‘bout me
Cause I been thinkin’ bout you

I slept with your friend just for revenge
But she was no good in bed
And many others have shared my covers
But I want you instead
And I hear about ya from my sister sometimes
She sends you my regards
And tells me how you spend your time
With pills and movie stars

If I had three wishes
1) I’d get someone to do the dishes
2) Someone to wash my clothes
3) And I’d take you back
I wouldn’t give ya no flack
Ahhh we’d make up goodness knows
And I’d be glad to have ya back if ya just bring the dog
And my silk shirt you stole
We’ll patch things up the way they were
And we’ll play some
Rock and roll

NUTHIN I WOULDN’T DO
(FOR A WOMAN LIKE YOU)

Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Rare & Well Done/2001)

Ahhh snakes around my ankles
Bats all in my hair
I fight tigers with a toothpick
Just to prove to you I care
I know ya don't expect it
But I got to make this dream of mine come true
And ya know it takes two
In this crazy world we live in
There ain't NUTHIN I WOULDN'T DO
FOR A WOMAN LIKE YOU

Ahhh age is not a barrier
It don’t get in our way
It’s love that really matters and
It’s love that makes you stay
And if I cant explain that
I can make the meaning of my thoughts come through
Straight to you
All ya gotta do is ask me
There ain't NUTHIN I WOULDN'T DO
FOR A WOMAN LIKE YOU

Lies are on the run now
The truth is all around
And I just cant get over
All the happiness that I found
I could never love another
After finding love like this there’s nothing new
All ya gotta do is trust me
There ain't NUTHIN I WOULDN'T DO
FOR A WOMAN LIKE YOU

I LET LOVE SLIP THROUGH MY FINGERS
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Rare & Well Done/2001)

Oh as I woke up this morning
The truth just suddenly dawned on me
Without a single word of warning
My life just sailed straight out to sea
Why didn't anybody tell me
Why didn't anybody say
Well I LET LOVE SLIP THROUGH MY FINGERS
When I let that girl just walk away

There were things I took for granted
When I should have fell down & kissed the earth
But when the seeds of discontent were planted
Thats when I found out what love was worth
And the pain just courses right on through me
Doncha know I’ve lost my closest friend
Well I LET LOVE SLIP THROUGH MY FINGERS
Something I will never do again

Oh it’s a day-to-day survival
Without that someone by my side
Sometimes I’m so ashamed how I will
Stay inside this house and try to hide
But I cant escape my inside feelings
The wrong choice cuts deeper than a knife
Now don't let love slip through your fingers
You’ll just regret it all your life

THE EARTHQUAKE OF YOUR LOVE
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Rare & Well Done/2001)

Nothing much happened til you came along
And opened up my eyes and turned the right to wrong
And my heart came to a halt
Honey it was all your fault
Walls started shakin’ & fallin’ from above
And I got caught in THE EARTHQUAKE OF YOUR LOVE

When ya smiled at me I knew I was on the right trail
Your body ran the needle right off the Richter Scale
And I had to have ya right then & there
As for consequences I didn't care
The earth started movin’ with a shudder & a shove
And I got caught in THE EARTHQUAKE OF YOUR LOVE

It sounded like thunder and I fell under
THE EARTHQUAKE OF YOUR LOVE
The ground opened wide & I fell inside of
THE EARTHQUAKE OF YOUR LOVE
I knew you weren’t like the others
When I felt the first shudders of
THE EARTHQUAKE OF YOUR LOVE

NEW YORK’S MY HOME (THE STREET SONG)
Words & Music by Al Kooper
(Rare & Well Done/2001)

I can find the street if you’ll just show me to the door
No I no longer need your vacuumed room anymore
There’s really nothing to say & if I explained it today
You wouldn’t understand it anyway
So let me go
Out into the streets filled with Shelley and Keats
And all the rhythmic beats of the city

Hop a bus take a ride
Take a long walk outside
And all around hear the sound of the city

Smoke-infested hallways
Yes I have made those scenes
With a window for my mistress and a roomful of magazines

I am too involved to see that I am just a spoke
In the wheel of the city
That turns ya round until you’re broke
And let’s ya go
And I must go

LYRICS TO BLACK COFFEE

MY HANDS ARE TIED
Words & Music by Al Kooper

I thought we had the greatest love in the world baby
I never thought you’d ever wanna look around
Then along came a certain young man, baby
And the two of you just up, up & left town
Well he doesn’t treat you very good baby
That’s what all my friends have said
But it’s not my place to make a stand
MY HANDS ARE TIED
And I hope that you understand

It’s not that I’m a really jealous kind of guy baby
Ya know if you love someone I believe you should set them free
(Boy, ya know that Sting said that)
So what in the world have ya done to your life, girl ?
Ya knowSherlock Holmes couldn’t solve this mystery
Do you wanna stay with him , settle down & raise a family
Or is there something I don’t know that you need to prove
Cause MY HANDS ARE TIED
And I think it’s you that should make the move

All’s well that ends well - that’s what they say in the movies
But in real life it never turn out that way
So here I am with noone I can hold onto
While you’re in some jerkwater town actin’ so blase’
Now if I could make love to a brand new woman
Ya know I’d never look back
But that’s not the kinda thing I could easily do
See - MY HANDS ARE TIED baby
Cause I'm still strung out on you

How My Ever Gonna Get Over You
Words & Music by Al Kooper

How my ever gonna get it back again
Back again the way it was
How my ever gonna get on track again
And recreate that little buzz
How my ever gonna find that “mmmmmm”
We both knew
How am I ever gonna get over you ?

What am I gonna do with all these little pieces
All these little pieces of my life
How my ever gonna put em all back together again
How my ever gonna get it right
And how on earth can I ever walk into
Anyplace there’s someone new
How am I ever gonna get over you ?

Everybody thought we were the kinda couple
That you see in People Magazine
All hugs and peachy keen
But you just up & said goodbye
Without a reason why

What am I gonna do with all these invitations
When you won’t even RSVP me
How my gonna extricate myself from this situation
When my brain just keeps screamin out:
EMERGENCY !
And if I ever see you out on the street, well
What in the hell am I supposed to do ?

How my ever gonna get over you ?
How my ever gonna get over you ?

GOING, GOING, GONE
Words & Music by Al Kooper & Dan Penn

I went to put my old boots on this mornin’
They was cracked on the side,
Had a hole straight through the sole,
I went downtown to the store where I first bought ‘ em
They said: “Al, they don’t make any boots like that no ‘ mo..”

Now, thats the way my whole life just seem to be goin’, people
Like the world be playin some big ass joke on me
Ya know they just tore down the theater where I saw my first movie
One day it was there,
Next day you couldn’t even tell where it used to be

GOIN, GOIN, GONE
The things we took for granted that we always counted on
If ya had a million dollars ya couldn’t even try ‘em on
Today ya can’t find no boots like that cause
They’re GOIN’, GOIN’, GONE....

We used to fall in love to that deep soul music
It was the voices of the angels and they never told you no lies
Now ya got pimps, gangstas, bigtime rappers
They made the whole damn thing disappear right before our eyes

GOIN, GOIN, GONE
The things we took for granted that we always counted on
And now you only hear that music on some oldies marathons
Pretty soon it won’t even be there no mo
It’s going going gone

I used to think I had my whole life before me
And in some small way I could change things all around
But now I feel that most people just ignore me
I got one foot in the gutter
And the other foot in the ground

GOIN GOIN GONE
Things we took for granted that we always counted on
I’d rather play this old guitar than to strap some new one on
I guess I’ll play my song this way
Til Im GOIN GOIN GONE
Even that beatup pillow I love to lay my head upon
Will someday be my tombstone
When I'm GOIN GOIN GONE

KEEP IT TO YOURSELF
Words & Music by Al Kooper

It’s a lonely time - in the dead of night
When your mind gets crazy
But it don’t get right
And you’d rather be someplace
But you don’t know where
Yeah it gets a little scary
When your soul’s laid bare

I think ya better KEEP IT TO YOURSELF
KEEP IT TO YOURSELF - Dont tell nobody
Take it easy now
KEEP IT TO YOURSELF
KEEP IT TO YOURSELF for now............

If a friends got problems that are wreckin his life
And he comes to you now about his faithless wife
He says “I need some answers”
“The kind from under your skin”
But your bed’s still burnin’
From where her body’s been

I think ya better KEEP IT TO YOURSELF
KEEP IT TO YOURSELF - Dont tell nobody
Take it easy now
KEEP IT TO YOURSELF
KEEP IT TO YOURSELF for now............

If ya got a nickel. if ya got a dime
And ya don’t have much else
Cause it’s a poor mans time
You might find a card game
You might win it all
Ya may wanna go uptown
And do the midnight crawl

I think ya better KEEP IT TO YOURSELF
KEEP IT TO YOURSELF - Dont tell nobody
Save your money now
KEEP IT TO YOURSELF
KEEP IT TO YOURSELF for now............

IMAGINARY LOVER
Words & Music by Al Kooper & Sandy Stewart

In all the years that I been breathin
I never seen the likes of you
You make a guy just have to stop and find a reason
Not to hyperventilate and turn blue

I saw you downtown in a doorway
I saw you uptown in the rain
I see you everywhere but you dont me standin there
Doncha think that’s just a little strange ?

YOU’RE MY IMAGINARY LOVER
Girl if you only knew the things that we do
YOU’RE MY IMAGINARY LOVER
Nobody knows how close I’ve been to you

Sometime’s I get a little crazy
And think I’ll make you notice me
By the time I think of what to say you’ve already walked away
And that is why you’re just destined to be

MY IMAGINARY LOVER
Girl if you only knew the things that we do
YOU’RE MY IMAGINARY LOVER
Nobody knows how close I’ve been to you

YOU’RE MY IMAGINARY LOVER
Girl if you only knew the things that we do
YOU’RE MY IMAGINARY LOVER
Nobody knows how close I’ve been to you

ANOTHER MAN’S PRIZE
Words & Music by Al Kooper

Sand in the heat and the sun in her hair
Ocean at her feet
There was no one else there
And I silently wept as she turned me away
The tears on my face ?
Salt-water, I prayed...

Daughter of a banker with the green in her blood
And me such a failure - just a poor fool in love
Recommendations;
Everyone said:
“You’ve just one thing in common,
You’re both out of your heads”

How could I be with ANOTHER MAN’S PRIZE?
How could I possibly rationalize ?
Blinded by beauty in a web spun full of lies
She was not my possession
But ANOTHER MAN’S PRIZE

He was born into high stock of privilige and class
And there but for fortune still I never will pass
But he took for granted what I treasured for life
And all his trappings and riches
Nearly cost him his wife

He couldn’t tell she was ANOTHER MAN’S PRIZE
She just slipped through his fingers
“neath the glaze in his eyes
And as I was about to reach that very highest of highs
It was my miscalculation
Cause she was ANOTHER MAN’S PRIZE

The worst feeling on earth is to know you’ve been used
‘Specially after that moment when two bodies are fused
When you build a false heaven - you’ve the devil to pay
And now that I know how I wound up this way

How could I be with ANOTHER MAN’S PRIZE?
How could I possibly rationalize ?
Blinded by beauty in a web spun full of lies
She was not my possession
But ANOTHER MAN’S PRIZE

She was not my possession
But ANOTHER MAN’S PRIZE

CHILDISH LOVE
Words & Music by Al Kooper

No superficial love
Could ever get down way deep inside of me
But it aint that way for everyone
Love ripens too fast then falls right off the tree
Modern Love is overated
I feel its way too complicated
I want a Childish Love

One that renews itself everyday
I want a Childish Love
Where the problems of the world will never get in the way
I want a love so sweet & tender
I’ll be the borrower & the lender
I want a Childish love

Oh Maturity
You are not always the blessing in disguise
I wont let you get your hooks in me
I wont let you blind my eyes
I wanna isolate original sin
Don’t wanna go no further than where I’ve been
I want a Childish love

One that renews itself everyday
I want a Childish Love
Where the problems of the world will never get in the way
I want a love so sweet & tender
I’ll be the borrower & the lender
I want a Childish love
I want a Childish love
I want a Childish love

Comin' Back in a Cadillac
Words & Music by Al Kooper

Right now I dont have a dime
Most folks say the way I live is a crime
My telephone it dont get no call
I guess I dont amount to too much at all
But I know that one day everything’ll be okay
Just ya wait & see

You might say I dont live high on the hog
Im unemployable - no one will front me a job
I live from day to day on a handout or two
And I can’t say a word when someone asks me whats new
But I know that pretty soon that i might hang the moon
Just ya wait & see

Hey I’ll be comin’ back in a Cadillac
Livin in some mansion
Not some shotgun shack
I’ll be comin’ back
Sho nuff in a Cadillac

I dont own no suit, no fancy dress shirt
Anything I wear is usually covered with dirt
I dont have a woman or a girlfriend to love
All I have is faith in the Creator above
But I know that one day everything’ll be okay
Just ya wait and see

Then I’ll be comin back in a Cadillac
Right from the direction of the right side of the tracks
I’ll be comin back
Sho nuff in a Cadillac

(I Want You To) Tell Me The Truth

Words & Music by Al Kooper

I want you to tell me the truth now baby
This is not the time to tell a lie
I know it’s hard for you to tell me the truth now baby
When it concerns the word “goodbye”

We’ve had our little ups & downs now, baby
And it’s not been as smooth as it’s been rough
See I’m only just a flesh & blood human being
But I guess that’s never been just quite good enough

So let’s just take a moment
And think about the good times
You say that’s all it should be takin’
Well then what about a moment
Of contemplative silence
So you can hear the sound of my poor heart breakin’

I know I shouldn’t ask you
For the truth now baby
Maybe it’s best if you just go
And leave me all alone here
With the truth now baby
I guess that’s all I ever wanted to know
I guess that’s all I ever wanted to know

LYRICS TO WHITE CHOCOLATE

I CRIED SO HARD
Words & Music by Al Kooper

I cried so hard
I thought my tears would flood the floor
Now I dont think I've ever cried
Quite that way before
My mind was on instant replay
Of you walkin out the door
And I cried so hard
I cried so hard
I cried so hard til I just couldn't cry no more

Hurt has its boundaries
You must approach them from the side
Then try to stand your ground before
The borders of your pride
You repossessed my feelings
With a pain I could not ignore
And I cried so hard
I cried so hard
I cried so hard til I just couldn't cry no more

You got me outa your system
And sent me packin on my way
But I put up such a fight
To work my way thru the night
IAnd see the golden light of day
I never thought I'd get there
And as I dragged myself onshore
I cried so hard
I cried so hard
I cried so hard til I just couldn't cry no more

Love is so confusing
It can turn from good to bad
In the blinking of an eyelash
You can lose all the love that you had
And when ya think you've crossed that line
And you stand up outside the law
(well, that is when)
You'll cry so hard
You'll cry so hard
You'll cry so hard
Til ya just can't cry no more

LOVETIME
Words & Music by Al Kooper

Girl, I can't describe how good you make me feel
You bring things out in me so long concealed
Ya changed my life
And now it's easier for me to face a world so cold
Just as long as I've got you right here to hold
Next to me all night long

When I'm with you it feels like LOVETIME
Anytime you're near it turns to LOVETIME
Ooo ya whisper in my ear
When you're around we just get down to LOVE TIME

My friends they ask me
Hey Al ? How cum u never leave the house at all
I laugh and tell them " go ahead now have a ball -
Lord knows that I've got mine ! "

I'd rather stay right here because it's LOVETIME
There's nothin I'd rather do then get to LOVETIME
I wanna spend every second with you
And we wont dare come up for air
It's LOVETIME !

Girl, if you're not careful you will be the death of me,
Cause I will love ya til there's nothin left of me,
And then some more -

Honey, that's just the way I feel about LOVETIME
Now go and unplug the phone because it's LOVETIME
I'm gonna love ya right down to the bone
Cant ya hear my clock go tick tick tock
It's LOVETIME
Honey, go and lock the door because it's LOVETIME
Aww save me just a lil bit more
It's such a mess but don't get dressed it's LOVETIME

YOU'LL NEVER KNOW TIL YOU GET THERE
Words & Music by Al Kooper

Well, I was riding on some Mayflower in the middle of the night
When some lady by the window said:
"Excuse me, can I trouble you for a light ?"
She asked me if I'd ever seen the final destination
And if I had might I predict would it be her salvation
I said YOU'LL NEVER KNOW TIL YOU GET THERE
No YOU'LL NEVER KNOW TIL YOU GET THERE

A women I knew casually once approached me wanting more
She claimed she couldn't reach that height
that we all make love for
I said: Even if I help you - you'll still have to lend a hand
Then she slapped my face & walked away
I said: "No you don't understand.."
And YOU'LL NEVER KNOW TIL YOU GET THERE
No YOU'LL NEVER KNOW TIL YOU GET THERE

On a dreary Sunday morning a preacher preached to me of Hell
And tho I tried to measure down to it
Well I stopped before I fell
And as his sermon neared conclusion
there was Heaven in its place
And it made me wonder where you finish up
When you've run the human race
But YOU'LL NEVER KNOW TIL YOU GET THERE
No YOU'LL NEVER KNOW TIL YOU GET THERE
YOU'LL NEVER KNOW
YOU'LL NEVER KNOW
YOU'LL NEVER KNOW TIL YOU GET THERE

CAST THE FIRST STONE
Words & Music by Al Kooper

I hear its hard to tell the truth today
At least thats what all the newspapers say
Now I have always tried to be a pillar of honesty
So I'd turn down the presidency
Of anything that was offered to me

Sometimes politicians tend to look the other way
If it's the first week in November and so close to election day
Now I've got a conscience too And I know so do all of you
But I bet that you wouldnt go through
The things you put other people through

He who is without sin
Let em cast the first stone
There's too many glass houses
Let the other man alone

Sometimes a man will find an snswer in his arm
And people will be outraged and demand he be done harm
To throw that man in jail instead of laying him down in bed
To make them happy in their head
Well either way the man is dead

I've lived my life over 60 years of good and basic bad
Viet Nam, Watergate, Nine Eleven and the loss of my mom & dad
So cant we learn when people fall
That evil still lurks down that White House hall
C'mon children just heed the call
Lets clear this up once and for all

He who is without sin
Let him cast the first stone
Jesus told all soldiers
There's no need just go on home
He who is without sin
Let em cast the first stone
There's too many glass houses
Let the other man alone

STAXABILITY
Words & Music by Al Kooper

You got to have a chunky rhthym,
A sweet soul guitar
That good ole Memphis steady rhthym
Purrin like a Cadillac car
And when ya feel the groove get thin
You holler "Hey"!
And then the horns come in
That's STAXABILITY. that's what it is
STAXABILITY

It worked for Mr. Otis Redding
It worked for Sam & Dave too
The down home blues of Johnny Taylor
King Curtis and his Memphis Soul Stew
Now dont go lookin for it on your radio
Cause folks today don't know
How the Memphis groove go
That STAXABILTY
STAXABILITY

Now Cropper, Jones and Dunn & Jackson
They were the baddest firm in town
They couldn't handle legal action
But they could lay the law down
Down in the home of the blues
A new sound was born
And the icing on the cake
Was the Memphis Horns
It's STAXABILITY
Hey STAXABILITY

I DON'T KNOW WHEN
(BUT I KNOW I'LL BE THERE SOON)

Words & Music by Al Kooper

Well I don't know but I been told
Streets of Heaven all lined with gold
I don't know when but I know that I'll be there soon

Mama be waitin' by the golden gate
She say take your time son ya know ya never too late
I don't know when but I know that I'll be there soon

Trials & tribulations all on this earth
Make me really wonder what a life is worth
I put my shoulder to the wheel and just carry on
And when the time is right
You know I will be gone

Then I'll pack up all my woes & all my cares
And put my life in the hands of the man upstairs
I don't know when but I know that I'll be there soon

Don't make a never no mind
If you're weak or strong
Cause He will surely know just whereya do belong
You don't need a ticket to get right on board
just put all your faith & trust in the Lord

Well I don't know but I been told
Streets of Heaven all lined with gold
I don't know when but I know that I'll be there soon
I don't know when but I know that I'll be there soon
I don't know when but I know that I'll be there soon
